Summer Heat Management for Pets
Summer heat can be dangerous for your pets. Here's how to keep them safe and comfortable during hot weather.
Recognizing Heatstroke Symptoms
Watch for excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, or collapse. Heatstroke is a medical emergency—cool your pet with lukewarm water and contact your vet immediately.
Adjust Walk Times
Walk dogs early morning (before 8 AM) or late evening (after 8 PM) when temperatures are cooler. Test pavement with your hand—if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for paw pads.
Hydration is Key
Always provide fresh, cool water. Add ice cubes to water bowls. Carry a portable water bottle on walks. Consider pet water fountains to encourage drinking.
Indoor Cooling Tips
Set air conditioning to 75-78°F (24-26°C). Provide cooling mats or damp towels for pets to lie on. Never leave pets in parked cars—even with windows cracked.
Frozen Treats
Make DIY frozen treats with chicken broth, fruit, or plain yogurt. Freeze wet food in Kong toys. These provide cooling relief and entertainment.
Grooming Matters
Regular brushing removes excess fur and improves air circulation. However, never shave double-coated breeds completely—their coat insulates against heat too.
Pool Safety
If your pet swims, supervise always. Rinse chlorine off afterward. Not all dogs can swim—use life jackets for safety.
Keep your furry friends cool and safe this summer! ☀️🐾
