Proper Dog Walking Techniques
Walking is more than exercise—it's mental stimulation, training, and bonding time. Here's how to do it right.
Duration and Frequency
Small Breeds: 20-30 minutes, 2-3 times daily. Medium Breeds: 30-60 minutes, 2 times daily. Large Breeds: 60-90 minutes, 2 times daily. High-Energy Breeds: May need 2+ hours total.
Puppies need shorter, more frequent walks (5 minutes per month of age, twice daily).
Essential Equipment
Harness vs. Collar: Harnesses prevent neck strain and give better control. Use flat collars for ID tags only. Leash Length: 4-6 feet for training and control. Avoid retractable leashes—they reduce control. Waste Bags: Always carry extras. Water: Bring portable bowls for walks over 30 minutes.
Leash Training Basics
Teach loose-leash walking—no pulling. Stop when they pull; move forward when leash is slack. Reward walking beside you with treats. Practice "heel" command at home first.
Meeting Other Dogs
Ask owners before allowing interaction. Watch body language—relaxed wagging is good; stiff, raised tails signal caution. Keep initial meetings brief. Always maintain control of your leash.
Seasonal Adjustments
Summer: Early morning or evening walks. Check pavement temperature. Bring extra water. Winter: Shorter walks in extreme cold. Protect paws with boots or paw balm. Wipe salt off paws after walks. Rain: Waterproof gear available. Some dogs love it; others need encouragement.
Safety Tips
Stay visible with reflective gear at night. Keep dogs on-leash unless in designated off-leash areas. Avoid retractable leashes near roads. Teach recall commands for emergencies.
Mental Stimulation
Vary routes to provide new smells and experiences. Allow sniffing time—it's mental exercise. Incorporate training commands during walks. Visit different environments occasionally.
